We get it, leaving your belongings in a self-storage unit, however good the reputation, there’s a nagging little voice in your head asking if it’s clean and safe. After all, these are your personal belongings. You’ve been able to use and touch them whenever you wanted, and now they are in the care of someone else.

At Metro Storage, we’ve been looking after the possessions of thousands of local residents and businesses across London for more than 20 years. It is our business to keep your stuff safe, and we’re always happy to talk your ear off about our state-of-the-art security systems and how you give yourself more peace of mind with a few simple tips.

Zooming out for a second, it is worth thinking about the self-storage industry as a whole. Although it’s our livelihood and we love it, we also know that most people don’t really consider it until they need to use it.

In the UK there are more than 50 million square feet of self-storage and early 2,000 self-storage stores. The industry has been around since the 1980s, and the latest customer satisfaction statistics show more than 92% of people are happy with their service in the UK.

It’s a big industry, that has been around for 40-something years, with many satisfied customers. Now, onto Metro Storage, and the questions we get asked about as many as any other: “Is self-storage safe and clean?”

It is safe

We’re constantly assessing ways to improve security and protect our premises, certainly more so than the average homeowner or business does. In fact, the security we have at our sites is very likely much stronger than the system you have at home.

That said, it’s important to ask your self-storage team about the locks, cameras, access and other measures in place. It’s best to start by checking if the provider is a member of the Self-Storage Association (SSA for short). This trade body ensures strict security measures have to be met, which should give you more confidence in your choice.

Security features that should feature include:

  • Digital CCTV throughout the store
  • CCTV monitoring
  • Intruder alarms
  • Smoke alarms
  • Alarm monitoring
  • Unique PIN numbers to access the store
  • Security patrols
  • Photo ID checks on signing up
  • Proof of address when signing up
  • No cash payments

It is clean

If it’s safer than your home, it is cleaner than your home? Well, that depends on how often you tidy up! But we would like to believe we’re up there given our rigorous cleaning schedules and our rules on what can be stored. Regular maintenance includes painting the inside and outside of the stores.

Floors should be swept and mopped several times a week, while bins are regularly emptied and light bulbs changes when they need to be. Our continued success in business relies on us keeping our stores in the best possible condition at all times; it goes beyond giving you the best first impression, it’s standard for us.

If you’d like to book a viewing at a time to suit you, please get in touch. Alternatively, you can book and pay for a very clean, very safe storage unit online using our online booking system – also via the website.

We hope to see you soon.
